Fehmarnbelt Tunnel

Denemarken_1

The Fehmarn Belt Tunnel is being built between the German island of Fehmarn and the Danish island of Lolland. This is the largest infrastructure project in Europe and the longest immersed tunnel in the world. An interesting and challenging project for Koop.

For the realization we started to install the drainage in the area of the working harbor by means of milled drainage channels on behalf of Sterk. Due to the stony soil conditions, this was not an easy task. Filter lances were then flushed in for the construction of the working harbor on the German side.

Prior to this, two pumping tests were carried out to determine the flow rates and the expected groundwater drawdown. At peak times, 20 pumps were operating simultaneously.

In order to transport a large part of the required construction material by sea and to protect the local road network on Fehmarn, a new construction harbor will be built. The harbor will measure 225 m x 25 m and at its deepest point will be about 3 m below sea level.

The second part of the dewatering was carried out on Fehmarn at the German tunnel portal. Here, the construction site is located in the sea. The excavation pit had already been completely secured with watertight sheet piles. Koop Wasserbau had the task of draining the pit (which contains 220,000 m³ of seawater) with the help of 6 sewage pumps and a pumping capacity of 1800 m³/h. The water was pumped out of the pit by a water pump.

The 18.2 km Fehmarnbelt Tunnel is scheduled to open in 2029.
